KNIGHTS FINISH 3-2 AT DANDY DUALS

Towanda goes 3-2 at Dandy Duals II

TOWANDA — For the Towanda Black Knights it was up to a wrestler who usually doesn’t have a place in the regular lineup if they wanted to beat Western Wayne and be the top seed in their pool at the Dandy Mini Marts Duals on Saturday.

Joe Koss was facing Dakota Swoyer, a regional qualifier from Western Wayne, in a 195-pound match with Towanda leading 32-24 with two weights left and Western Wayne sending out two of their top kids.

Koss caught Swoyer and pinned him, clinching the victory for Towanda as Western Wayne got a quick fall at 220 to make the final score 38-30.

“I’m real happy with Joe Koss,” Towanda coach Bill Sexton said. “Joe is a backup for us at 82 and 95 and he came through with an absolutely huge win for us in the Western Wayne match. He pinned a kid who was a regional qualifier last year. It was a great match for Joe.

“We go into those last two bouts, we are up by eight points and I rolled the dice. Maybe we can go out there, maybe we can survive, maybe we can catch something and Joe did an excellent job going out and getting the fall. As far as our day, that’s the highlight of the day in terms of the match. He pulled us out of the fire. It was a great, great win for him and it turned out to be a good win for us.”

Towanda finished third in the tournament, going 3-2, with losses to state-ranked Southern Columbia and Montoursville.

Towanda senior Dayton Wickwire was named the outstanding wrestler of the tournament.

“I am very pleased with Dayton,” Sexton said. “There were a lot of very good wrestlers this year. A number of state place winners here, a lot of very competitive weight classes, a couple of state finalists and a lot of guys that have been to states. You can’t vote for your own kids so the voting is done by the opposition coaches and to have them recognize the kind of day Dayton had and really the kind of year that Dayton is having is great. It’s been a while to win both our outstanding wrestlers at both of our tournaments is quite an accomplishment for the young man. He’s wrestling very well.”

Towanda beat Liberty 49-22, West Scranton 51-21 and then had the 38-30 win over Western Wayne to go 3-0 in pool play.
